Vespers Holland #6
The Hours Collection
Named for the darkness of
night, this blending of exotica includes the following aromatics: Myrrh,
Cedar and Frankincense.
First known as Olibanum
but later by its more common name FRANKINCENSE the rock resin of
this tree was considered as precious as gold. Obtained by making a deep
cut in the tree trunk the resin sap would ooze slowly into the air and
harden solid. It would then be collected and stored under guard such was
its value. It would be sparingly used and its spicy aroma would fill the
air only on the grandest of occasion.
Native to the lands of the eastern Mediterranean the CEDAR tree
takes its name from the Greek word meaning “to cleanse”. Considered sacred
it was also known as “Arbor Vitae” or Tree of Life. It gives a clear,
syrup like oil that has been highly prized since ancient time.
The ancient Egyptians considered the viscous golden resin obtained from a
small Arabian shrub a most treasured item. MYRRH was used in
worship and celebration and was a gift of high order for it was
exceedingly rare and difficult to obtain. Coveted for its intriguing aroma
it was also believed to have many health giving properties. |
